Welcome to our Guide on Communication Protocols

This wiki site has been designed to help you:

  • Learn about OPAL-RT's communication protocol capabilities
  • Find user documentation specific to our RT-LAB, HYPERSIM and NI Veristand Platforms and,
  • See what software/hardware products are required for each protocol, including compatibility matrices.

Please see our full list of communication protocols or sort by industry sector below or use the search on the right to search the guide. Note: For searching the entire wiki (including detailed user documentation), use the search on the top right.

Our Approach to Communication Protocols

OPAL-RT's Real-Time Simulator architecture is designed to leverage standard Commercial Off-the-Shelf components to reduce system cost and increase flexibility for our users.

It is for this reason that most communication protocol software drivers are developed to run directly on a simulator's CPU(s) without the need for additional hardware. This means that many drivers are easily activated via software license for our RT-LAB and HYPERSIM simulation platforms.

An array of add-on modules specifically selected for their Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) capabilities are available for protocols that require specialized hardware, such as in the Automotive and Aerospace industries. Additional add-on modules are available to further expand functionality, such as additional ethernet ports or precision time synchronization, which can be installed simply and easily, just like with a desktop computer.

To learn more about, which products are required to use a specific Communication Protocol driver, please view that driver's page from the list above.
