OPAL-RT supports IEC 61850 interfaces to connect to various IEDs via the publishing and subscribing of GOOSE and Sampled Values messages. Using a standard network interface card, this protocol can be easily and rapidly integrated into any simulation model. With the proper user configuration, a driver is initialized on the target simulator at the start of the simulation and begins publishing and subscribing to other IEDs. The IEC 61850 driver makes use of asynchronous threads on dedicated cores in order to achieve high performance.
OPAL-RT supports IEC 61850-9-2LE Sampled Values, as well as Samples Values based on a Substation Configuration Language (SCL) file (IEC 61869-9). Simulators can be used to emulate merging unit or to receive data from real merging unit. GPS time synchronization is performed using IEEE 1588, IRIG-B or 1PPS input signals using an optional time synchronization card (see table below). A complete error injection mechanism is also available for IEC 61850-9-2 (Part number: OP3252) to emulate cyber-security attacks on the network or erroneous transmission. Product Selection Guide
IEC 61850-9-2 Sample Values requires software license OP3252, which comes with 50 data points (Visit this website more information on data points).
- If additional data points are required, then they may be added via product OP3050.
- The data integrity manipulation add-on may be added via product OP3253. For more information on this add-on with HYPERSIM please click here.
- Since real-time simulators come with one available ethernet port, if additional physical ethernet ports are required on the real-time simulator, these can be added via kit. Note that for applications requiring many ethernet ports, the OP4510 platform is not recommended.
- IEC 61850-9-2 Sample Values can be added to real-time simulators without the need of additional hardware but a time synchronization module is recommended to maintain high-precision synch and time stamping. For more information on precision timing, please visit the following page.
