Solution

OPAL-RT provides the capability to add an OPC UA server to a real-time simulation, where the user can use an OPC UA client to monitor any kind of simulation points and is also able to control the simulation by writing data. Our OPC UA driver also offers the possibility of providing the server with an external timestamp, as opposed to the server receiving its timestamp directly from the system it is running on. For example, the user can use precision GPS time-stamping to the server according to the epoch time it received through GPS.
OPC UA is an independent service-oriented communication protocol platform developed by the OPC Foundation and integrates all the functionalities of the individual OPC Classic specifications into one extensible framework. The protocol is client/server-based and relies on TCP/IP over Ethernet.

OPC UA and OPC DA applications require software license 3131, which comes with 50 data points (Visit this page more information on data points). If additional data points are required, then they may be added via product OP3050. For applications requiring precision time-stamping, a time synchronization module may be added to the simulator. For more information on precision timing, please visit the following page.

OPC UA

OPC UA can be added to real-time simulators without the need of additional hardware. However, since real-time simulators come with at least one available Ethernet port, if additional physical Ethernet ports are required on the real-time simulator, these can be added via kit. Note that for applications requiring more than three (3) ethernet ports, the OP4510 platform is not recommended.

OPC DA (classic)

OPC DA applications require the use of an external gateway to convert OPC UA to OPC DA. For applications where the simulator acts as the server, OP3133 is required. For applications, where the OPAL-RT simulator acts as the client, OP3134 is required.

Note that this item includes the Cogent DataHub® gateway. This gateway converts real-time, streaming OPC UA data to DA. Using the Gateway, you can connect any OPC DA, any OPC-UA client to the real-time simulation (OPC UA server), locally or over the plant network.
